About
A diverse clinical career spanning the NHS and healthcare settings across the world.
Dr Ellen Welch is a GP, award-winning author and medical commentator based in Cumbria. Since qualifying from the University of Liverpool in 2004, she has built a diverse clinical career spanning the NHS and healthcare settings across the world.
Her experience includes expedition medicine on Mount Kilimanjaro, a season as a ski field medic in New Zealand, providing medical cover at major UK festivals, working in international medical repatriation, and spending more than a decade as a senior cruise ship doctor. These varied roles have given her a unique perspective on healthcare in some of the world's most challenging and unconventional environments, shaping her expertise in travel medicine, women's health and the realities of delivering care beyond the traditional consulting room.
Alongside her clinical work, Ellen is an award-winning author whose writing draws on her frontline medical experience to make complex health topics accessible, engaging and evidence-based. She regularly writes about general practice, women's health, travel medicine, the NHS and health policy, and has contributed expert commentary across national television, radio and print media.
Ellen is passionate about making medicine understandable without making it simplistic, bridging the gap between clinical evidence, healthcare policy and the real-world experiences of patients and healthcare professionals.
